Don't try this at home, folks. A video of two Wisconsin teenagers scaling the Golden Gate Bridge quickly went viral this week, prompting an investigation into bridge security.
The stomach-churning video, filmed by the young daredevils, show them performing somersaults and dangling from cables over the cars below without safety equipment, using only their fingers for support. The teenagers, who are being referred to as Peter Teatime and Tommy Rector, got to the top of the landmark by climbing the vertical steel suspension ropes, then onto one of the span’s main cables and finally on to the top of the north tower—746 feet above ground.
“Guys, we’ve just made it to the top,” one teen is heard saying in the video. “This is incredible, to be honest. This is so beautiful up here.”
The death-defying stunt was performed in April and Golden Gate officials say they have launched an investigation and are planning to beef up security on the bridge. If caught, the climbers could also face misdemeanor trespassing charges and fines.
