Nature lovers, get excited. The San Francisco Department of Parks and Recreation has rewarded the City by the Bay with four new and/or totally renovated public parks this summer. Each sparkling new park brings something special to its neighborhood—from a rockin' climbing wall over in Glen Park to a baseball lover's paradise across town in SoMa.
What was once a parking lot at 17th and Folsom Street is now a park—and it's a park without a name. We have to wait until the official unveiling on June 23 to learn the brand new public park's official name, but the location is a prime one. Nearby, find ODC Theater and Mission Bowling Club as well as the lively Rite Spot bar and restaurant on the corner.
Following a $14 million renovation, the revamped 67-acre Glen Park Recreation Center at Elk and Chenery Streets features a gym, auditorium, hiking trails, two baseball fields, two tennis courts, on-going summer camps, a children’s play area, and the city's first public rock climbing wall. What more could you want?
The upgraded Mountain Lake Park Playground at 98 Funston Avenue in the Richmond District takes up over 15 acres alongside the Presidio and now features a brand new play structure. This park has been a part of the neighborhood for years, but the $13 million renovation has made this lake-front hangout much more accessible and modern.
There's a new batting cage at the tiny but sports-heavy Victoria Manolo Draves Park at Folsom and Sherman Streets, just across the street from Deli Board. The cage joins a baseball field and two-level kids' playground. In fact, this Thursday the San Francisco Giants' own Lou Seal will kick-off the new park's opening reception from 3 to 5pm.
Which one will you visit first?
