A native Californian was honored this week, 66 million years after his death.
To the delight of dino enthusiasts across the Golden State, Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill honoring the Augustynolophus morrisi—a duck-billed, plant-eating creature—as the official dinosaur of California. Auggie (for short) originally roamed the earth between 66 and 100 million years ago (around the same time as more well-known species like the Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus), and its bones have only been found in California. The remains were found in Fresno County in 1939 and 1940 as the most complete dinosaur ever to be unearthed in the state.
The dino also has his own Twitter account, naturally. You can follow his tweets at @augustynolophus. According to his bio, he’s based in L.A. and is older than Jerry Brown (barely).
The state dinosaur joins other official state mascots like the California Redwood, the avocado, the grizzly bear and the California poppy.
