Easter has come and gone but giant white rabbits are still hanging around San Francisco. Twenty-three-foot inflatable rabbit sculptures have been installed in Civic Center Plaza, and will be on adorable display 24 hours a day through April 25th.
The glowing rabbits are the work of Australian artist Amanda Parer, whose "Intrude" sculptures aim to draw attention to Australia's rabbit overpopulation problem. (Yes, really.) According to Parer, rabbits "are an out of control pest, leaving a trail of ecological destruction wherever they go and defying attempts at eradication. First introduced by white settlers in 1788, they have caused a great imbalance to the countries endemic species. The rabbit also is an animal of contradiction."
Speaking of contradiction, the San Francisco Art Commission and Mayor Ed Lee feels the purpose of the installation is to "celebrate public art and celebrate families."
Either way, the internally lit five rabbit sculptures are worth a visit—especially at night.
"Intrude" has toured the world and Parer's bunnies have only just kicked off the local leg of their 2016 North American tour this week. The waterproof and fireproof air-filled sculptures remain under constant bodyguard bunnyguard protection.
