No plans yet? Check out the Castro Street Fair, August Moon Fest and more awesome events going down this weekend.
Explore the back alleys of Chinatown and learn the stories behind those glorious old neon signs that keep the neighborhood aglow. This two mile stroll is guided by the author-photographer team behind the book San Francisco Neon, Al Barna and Randall Ann Homan. These two know a thing or 20 about preserving these colorful relics, but a lively Q&A is encouraged so come armed with your curiosity.
Get a nibble of that free-wheeling houseboat lifestyle we all dream about from time to time with this opportunity to explore inside 15 charming floating abodes of Sausalito. This intimate, easy-paced waterfront stroll is punctuated by live music and exhibits from the area’s arts and literary characters. This year’s event ties in with the 75th anniversary of Marinship, an emergency shipyard built during WWII that shaped the Sausalito we know and love today, so keep an eye out for several 1940’s-focused exhibits.
Rare is a movie that makes your tummy rumble, but San Francisco’s Food + Farm Film Fest will do just that, aiming the spotlight on all aspects of the culinary world from field to fork. Thoughtful documentaries and charming shorts alike are on the schedule. Be sure to catch Friday night’s screening, which includes an after-party at Four Barrel with bites from Bi Rite Market and local beer and wine.
A celebration of the summer’s harvest and a thanksgiving to the moon, this mid-autumn festival is characterized by bright paper lanterns and mooncakes. Chinatown will shut down along Grant Avenue between California and Broadway, giving way to parades, cultural performances, way more food than you probably need to eat, cooking demos and a Saturday evening storytelling and magic show. The whole thing culminates with Sunday’s White Crane Dragon Parade, a bucket-list must-see for many.
This show at the Greek kicks off a four-dates-only tour featuring these two indie darlings. It's the first time that the two bands are playing together—expect lots of indie-folk beats, disco-punk drum solos and electro-soul sounds in addition to new tunes from both acts’ 2017 releases, Heartworms and Hot Thoughts. Oakland’s own Day Wave, a.k.a. Jackson Phillips (formerly of Carousel) opens the show with his signature dream-pop.
These two childhood friends previously traded solely in mashing up top pop and rock hits (and they're damn good at it too) but recently dipped their paws into original production with a serie of remixes. Take a listen on good old Soundcloud, dance to it and then do that all over again live at Mezzanine.
Eat, drink and dance, dance, dance your way across one of the city’s most famous and lovable neighborhoods at the annual Castro Street Fair. Held every year since 1974 on the first Sunday in October, the fest welcomes about 50,000 people into the blocks surrounding Market and Castro Street. Hot tip: Head to the Castro Theatre’s parking lot for crowd favorite country western line-dancing at the Sundance Saloon.
