With so many things to do in San Francisco, it's easy to miss the many fantastic art exhibits and shows that pass through smaller galleries, as opposed to big museum shows. While it's nearly impossible for even the most ardent art lover to see it all, we've once again curated a collection of must see exhibits currently (or soon to be) gracing the walls of San Francisco's finest art spaces. Plan accordingly.
Jacob's Dream: A Luminous Path, Grace Cathedral
Benjamin Bergery is a French media artist and cinematographer, and Jim Campbell is one of the most famous light artists working in America today. Together, they make up Grace Cathedral's artists-in-residence program. For their most recent exhibition, Berry and Campbell have created a powerful installation of light and moving images. "Jacob's Dream" is meant to evoke a pathway between our earthly home and the unseen world. If there's a more stunning local setting for a light exhibit, we can't think of one. Through February 28, Grace Cathedral, 1100 California Street, SF.
Stephen Vincent, 871 Fine Arts
Stephen Vincent's timely drawings take over the 871 Fine Arts bookstore this month as the artist explores "the Last 100 Days of the Presidency of Barack Obama." This colorful exhibition bookends Vincent's earlier black and white collection of the first 100 days of our former President. Through February 28, 871 Fine Arts, 20 Hawthorne Street, SF.
Get Lost, Embark Gallery
In this group exhibition, local artists Simón Garcia-Minaur, Izidora Leber, Richard-Jonathan Nelson and Courtney Trouble tackle queer identity politics in the digital age. This contemporary art show was juried by Avram Finkelstein, a founding member of a New York-based AIDS activist artist collective spawned by ACT UP in 1988. Through March 4, Embark Gallery, Fort Mason, 2 Marina Blvd., SF.
The Human Form, John Berggruen Gallery
The human body is a favorite subject of artists throughout history. This massive exhibit focusing on artists' representations of the human form kicks off this gallery's new space on Hawthorne Street. Featuring artists as well-known and varied as Henri Matisse, Edward Hopper and Pablo Picasso, this 60-piece exhibition offers an eclectic look at the way artists see our bodies. Through March 4, John Berggruen Gallery, 10 Hawthorne Street, SF.
Lance-scape Architecture, Creativity Explored
Architecture fans and transit nerds, get excited. Artist Lance Rivers chronicled his take on visual experiences and familiar vantage points of iconic Bay Area bridges, buildings, tunnels and BART stations in this delightfully familiar exhibition. BART art, your time has finally arrived. Through March 9, Creativity Explored, 3245 16th Street, SF.
Humanity Today, Jenkins Johnson Gallery
Current events have a lot of us on edge lately. This new and challenging exhibit from artists Sadie Barnette Victor Ehikhamenor, Aida Muluneh, Carlos Javier Ortiz, Blessing Ngobeni, Gordon Parks and Lissette Solórzano aims to take a global view on racial segregation post-Apartheid, post-Civil Rights and post-Cuban Revolution. We're particularly excited about the diversity of this art show, from the subjects covered by the artists to the many mediums they've employed. Through March 11, Jenkins Johnson Gallery, 464 Sutter Street, SF.
