6 art exhibits not to miss in August

With so many things to do in San Francisco, it's easy to miss the many fantastic art exhibits and shows that pass through smaller galleries, as opposed to big museum shows. While it's nearly impossible for even the most ardent art lover to see it all, we've once again curated a collection of must see exhibits currently (or soon to be) gracing the walls of San Francisco's finest art spaces. Plan accordingly.

"Shapeshifting," Creativity Explored

Artists Evelyn Reyes and Yolanda Ramirez have spent 20 years creating artwork at Creativity Explored, the famed nonprofit visual arts center for artists with developmental disabilities. "Shapeshifting" features works on paper by both artists, and we're particularly interested in checking our Reyes' popular exploration of abstract carrots. Through September 7, Creativity Explored, 3245 16th Street, SF.

"Chroma: Lisa Solomon + Christine Buckton Tillman," Rare Device

Artists Lisa Solomon and Christine Buckton Tillman invited the public to send them colored objects in the mail. The artists then arranged and compiled those objects into an orderly, chromatically compelling piece that we can't wait to see. Solomon and Tillman will also be exhibiting collaborative drawings and silkscreen posters. Through September 6, Rare Device, 1845 Market Street, SF.

"Mothers and Daughters in Art," Mission Cultural Center

Peruvian born artists Mabel Valdiviezo and Bila Flores explore the immigrant journey of three generations of women in one family. Intense colors and a modern touch offer a new perspective on the multi-generational immigrant experience. If you're looking for a special activity to do with your mom, this exhibit is it. Through September 9, Mission Cultural Center, 2868 Mission Street, 2nd Floor, SF.

"Anomie Belle: Flux Album," Modern Eden

The addition of music takes this art exhibit to the next level—and beyond. Haunting, dark and sexy, Anomie Belle's new album "Flux" has inspired all of the visual art displayed in this exhibit. The public is invited to view the work while listening to the album, enhancing the overall artistic experience. Sounds pretty cool to us. Through September 10, Modern Eden, 403 Francisco Street, SF.

"Mind Lines," Interface Gallery/Oakland

According the the Interface Gallery, sculptor John Zane Zappas' work sits "in the fuzzy terrain between Ikea, your favorite rock and a Shaker chair." If that description wasn't intriguing enough, the Los Angeles-based young artist will also be showing a series of 19 stick drawings that the viewer is welcome to rearrange any way they (we) wish. Through September 11, Interface Gallery/Oakland, 480 49th Street, Oakland.

"Bullitt, Blow-Up, & Other Dynamite Movie Posters," FraenkelLab

Film buffs, get excited! This fresh exhibit features photography from rarely shown film posters, starting with the dawn of movies and following all the way through to present day. Hitchcock fans won't be disappointed, nor will devotees of the experimental film genres of the 1960s through 1990s. The exhibit makes special effort to feature the movie posters of classic films set in San Francisco, including the Bogart and Bacall classic "Dark Passage." Through September 24, FraenkelLab, 1632 Market Street, SF.
