Tuesday, June 20th marks the official first day of summer, and for the first time in forever, we're actually feeling the heat in San Francisco. Regardless of whether you're embracing the sunshine or shaking an angry fist at global warming, here are three groovy events to get you in the mood for a fun-filled summer.
Surrealistic Summer Solstice Concert
This tantalizing summer jam will light up Golden Gate Park on Wednesday. Members of The Jefferson Airplane, Motherhips, the Terrapin Family Band and many more will rock out while the Conservatory of Flowers plays host to a trippy light show. Celebrating the legacy of the park’s famous flower children (and the flora and fauna inside the Conservatory) dressing up is encouraged. Plenty of food trucks will be on hand to satisfy munchies. Wednesday, June 21, 6pm at Conservatory of Flowers
Get groovy and experience the spirit that made San Francisco the epicenter of the Summer of Love at this 60s-inspired dance party. DJs from Make It Funky will get you on your feet with classic tracks, while Mad Alchemy turns out a light show in the tradition of legends from the Bay’s psychedelic heyday. It’s all going down in beautiful Grace Cathedral — a fitting place to feel the love. Thursday, June 22, 7:30pm at Grace Cathedral
Chronicle Books: Born in the Summer of Love Exhibit Opening
A publisher of quirky kids’ books, DIY tomes and cherished cookbooks, Chronicle Books was born right here in San Francisco in 1967, the Summer of Love. Celebrate this well-regarded purveyor of perfect gifts at this exhibit opening at San Francisco Center for the Book. You’ll see familiar classics including The Beatles Anthology, Mama, Do You Love Me? and the must-have cookbook Tartine. Friday, June 23, 7pm at San Francisco Center for the Book
