How to annoy a Carioca

1.

“Expect heavy rain and dropping temperatures tomorrow.” Bad weather on a weekend, especially after a sunny week, is one of the biggest annoyances for Cariocas.

2.

Saying São Paulo is better than Rio. Get ready for a never-ending debate (and we will win).

3.

Suggesting plans away from their neighborhoods . Cariocas are a bit territorial and don’t like leaving their "zones." Exceptions are made for fun, but don’t push it.

4.

Using the word "bolacha” for biscuit. Just stop: it’s "biscoito." No room for discussion here.

5.

Claiming the city is dangerous. Every big city has safety issues, and research shows the numbers are improving here.

6.

Saying Cariocas don’t work. Just because we can hit the beach before or after work doesn’t mean we don’t work hard.

7.

“Attention, traffic jam ahead!” Some days, traffic is a mess (but still better than São Paulo), and anything can spark a heated debate that might even turn violent. Cariocas are passionate.

8.

Criticizing flip-flops. No matter the place – beach, mall, bar, or even a wedding – we wear flip-flops. Deal with it.

9.

Charging 12% service. The service here isn’t great to begin with, and now you want to increase the tip?

10.

Badmouthing the city. Excuse us: only Cariocas can do that.
