Ramen noodles have become trendy in Porto, mainly after the opening of RO – short for Ramen e Outros (Ramen and Others) – in the Baixa. The space is small and busy but, as in any Japanese eatery, there are places at the counter. There are various kinds of ramen to offer, served in steaming soup, including a veggie version made with mushroom broth; tantan, made with chicken broth, pork neck and minced pork; and several mazemen (ramen served without broth). There are also Japanese pancakes and – a more recent arrival – donburi, rice cups with toppings.
