After his celebrated stint in London, this is Portuguese chef Nuno Mendes’s first venture in Porto. It’s connected to one of the city’s most luxurious hotels (The Largo), but it really captures the city’s true essence: elegant but never stuffy. The space is cosy, with lots of wood, and the menu goes big on northern Portuguese dishes. Unique menu items include a savoury sponge cake with prawns, hearty stews like fish escabeche or traditional tripe, and snacks like the famous turnip custard tart with caviar. It’s open from breakfast (even for non-hotel guests) until dinner, and there’s a nice outdoor terrace with a view of the busy Largo São Domingos.
