Portuguese music spills out onto the street from Casa Portista, in Vila Nova de Gaia. Managing the house – and the playlist – for almost 40 years is owner the Guilhermina Valente, and she intends to keep on doing it for a lot longer. “This is my house. I’m not getting out”, she insists. She also likes to play with the pots and pans, and we’re better off for it. Gizzards, bifanas (pork sandwiches), breaded meats and pataniscas (fried meat or fish patties) are some of the petisco on offer or available to order at Casa Portista. If you want to watch the next FC Porto game there, don’t worry: while it closes at 9pm, Guilhermina assures us that “on game days”, she stays “until the end”.
