Few visitors travel all the way to the Upper Douro. Indeed, few people have built tourist facilities on the Upper Douro. But Casa do Rio’s owner decided to do just that, as a companion project to the Quinta do Vallado, near Peso da Régua. The result is a fabulous house built out of wood over two large shale pillars – a sustainable building right next to the river. In it you’ll hear nothing but the chirping of birds and the running of water in two nearby tanks, where you can cool off during the (very) hot months. Alternatively you can try the swimming pool, take a boat ride or venture staying on top of a paddle surf board. The Casa do Rio has it all, and there are many vines where you can take walks too.
