The neoclassical former stock exchange – now headquarters of Porto’s chamber of commerce – was built on the site of the monastery of the neighbouring Igreja de São Francisco. Guided tours (every half hour) are the only way to see the interior of this masterpiece of 19th-century Portuguese architecture. It is worth a visit just for the neo-Moorish ballroom, designed by civil engineer Gustavo Adolfo Gonçalves e Sousa with panache, if not good taste.
