This convent church was founded in the early 15th century, but it was in the 17th and 18th that it gained its stylish Renaissance north portal door and extravagant interior decoration. A veritable explosion of Baroque carved and gilded woodwork is offset by splendid azulejos – traditional Portuguese decorative tiles. And unlike at the even more lavish Igreja de São Francisco (see below) it is free to get in.
