Philly obsession Tastykake announced this week that it has created a new product called Kake Chips that, as the name suggests, ”combines the crunch of a chip with the sweetness of cake.”
The curious treats debuted on grocery shelves yesterday in two flavors: Birthday Kake and Salted Caramel. The birthday variety comes with colorful sprinkles, while the latter delivers “a rush of sweet caramel flavor with a deliciously balanced salty zing.”
Tastykake says that the chips are made with zero grams of trans fat per serving, and there is no artificial flavoring or preservatives. They come in 6-ounce resealable, multipack bags for $2.99 each.
For some people, the thought of a Tastykake chip could be sort of stomach-turning, but so many Philadelphians are obsessed with these little bite-sized sweets. We caught up with a few of those people for a Q&A in our most recent print magazine to find out what it is about a Tastykake that keeps them coming back—and maybe even willing to snag a bag of these chips:
Jamie Gates, 28, from Fishtown: "I grew up with a box of Tastykakes always in the house. Now I work at the Navy Yard and get to smell them being made at the Tastykake factory. They are the absolute best!”
Josiah Grandfield, 26, from Graduate Hospital: “Butterscotch Krimpets are a go-to late-night snack. Always fresh, always there when I need them.’
Brendan Sobottka, 27, East Passyunk: “Tastykakes are like an old friend; the relationship never changes. I love to visit them.”
Becky Giglio, 28, Conshohocken: “My husband and I love them so much that we gave them out at our wedding!”
