A super-quick history, in case you ever wondered:
According to local LGBTQ historian Bob Skiba, Philadelphia’s gayest enclave—which used to be called the “Gay Ghetto”—got its name in 1995 when a City Paper columnist wrote that it was “a beautiful day in the Gayborhood” in an article about Outfest.
The name stuck, and the city made it official by installing 36 rainbow street signs around the area. These days, Skiba says, “The name is used informally across the country to refer to gay neighborhoods in general, but I’m pretty sure we were the first!”
