Perth's favourite local late-night snack

Just because you’re up in the small hours, doesn’t mean your snack options should be restricted to the few usual suspects.

Just because you’re up in the small hours, doesn’t mean your snack options should be restricted to the few usual suspects. These nocturnal eateries are here for you when you need them most, and what’s more, you can pay with card for the smallest of purchases.

  • Northbridge

Chimek had its origins in the Fremantle Markets, and after drawing crowds with their incredible fried chicken they opened a Northbridge outpost. Open for lunch and dinner until midnight every evening but Monday, Chimek Northbridge is ideal for that late-night bite. All their chicken meals are $12.50, and there’s a world to choose from; classic southern-fried chicken seasoned with cayenne pepper and paprika, the dak gang jeong with sticky gochu jang sauce, the guadalajara cilantro with jalapeños, and more. Chimek also has burgers and tasty sides.

  • Northlands
Kitsch Bar Asia is the ideal Leederville spot to pop in and grab a quality bite to eat in the small hours. Sit yourself down under the lanterns and get ready for some delicious treats that won’t break the bank. The menu is designed to share and there’s plenty of snacks on offer if you’re just looking for a small bite (plus daily specials for bigger plates). Chow down on their soft-shell crab and pork corn tortilla with kimchi ($8.50), crispy salt and pepper tofu with sambal kecap ($9.60), or satisfy your sweet tooth with a peanut butter ice cream sandwich with chocolate cookie and salted caramel ($8).

Pleased To Meet You serves up quality Australian-American fare well into the night, and describe themselves as an “indoor food truck”. Open late from Wednesday through to Sunday, it’s the perfect spot to pop in before or during a night out in Northbridge. Their mess hall-style dining room has long tables spanning the width of the room to be shared by multiple diners, and there’s always a buzz. Small plates are designed to share. The beef tongue ruben bao or corn bread and maple butter will cost you less than a tenner, and their delicious watermelon salad with goats curd is $14. Hankering for some sweet treats? Look no further than their famous $9 S’Mores or their vanilla cheesecake with rhubarb and strawberry compot.

  • Waterford
Varsity Bar Waterford
Varsity Bar Waterford

Varsity Bar’s been a student staple over in Nedlands since 2013, and locals south of the river have been quick to welcome the new Waterford outpost. Nestled in next to the shopping centre in Karawara, Varsity Bar serves up classic American loaded fries, subs and hot dogs, pizza, burgers and desserts late into the night. Start your late-night bites with some chilli fries (chips, beef chilli, house cheese whip, diced red onion and jalapeños) or spicy jalapeño poppers (crumbed jalapeños stuffed with cream cheese served with blue cheese sauce), then get stuck into a Philly cheesesteak or Notorious PIG pulled pork burger.

The Meatball Bar
The Meatball Bar

The Meatball Bar’s South Terrace outpost serves up tasty treats late into the night, with a myriad of meatball combinations on offer. Go for the traditional Mamma’s Balls, featuring traditional Italian beef and pork meatballs with hand-made gnocchi, slow-cooked Napoli sauce, crispy basil, house cashew pesto and parmesan chips, or try out the Shiny Disco Balls – sticky bourbon and espresso coffee pork meatballs with hickory barbecue sauce on a cornbread fritter with creamy ranch beams and onion rings. Wondering where the ‘bar’ part comes into it? Every dish has a specific suggested cocktail, and the creative concoctions are peppered throughout the specials.

  • Northbridge
The Moon
The Moon

The Moon Late Night Café is a Northbridge favourite for nocturnal locals. The William Street nightspot opened its doors in 1991, with an Art Deco interior and a fun op-shop style courtyard mixing up furniture and lamps from different decades. Grab a booth inside or head outside to the comfy couches and settle in for some late-night bites and laidback live music. Pizza, pasta and burgers are on hand to sate your appetite, along with the Moon’s signature desserts. Pick up a banana and honey dessert pizza with mascarpone, walnut and cinnamon, topped with a scoop of ice cream.

  • Guildford
Alfred's Kitchen
Alfred's Kitchen

Alfred’s Kitchen is a Perth institution. The late-night roadside burger spot on the corner of Meadow and James streets has been slinging meals since 1946, beckoning in customers with an outdoor fire and much-lauded eats. Alfred’s serves hamburgers, steak burgers and bacon burgers well into the night, and their patties have been made to the same recipe since they opened their doors in the 1940s. For sides, grab some pea and ham soup cooked on their woodfire stoves or a big serve of chips and gravy. The Guildford eatery also serves veggie varieties including a lentil burger with vegetables, herbs and spices.
