Lulu La Delizia, Joel Valvasori-Pereza’s venture out on his own, is part homage to his ancestral homeland of Friuli, and part modern interpretation of regional Italian. The Subiaco pasta bar, more intimate than his previous digs at CBD stalwart Lalla Rookh, is seeing him grab national attention. To a 1950s soundtrack, he’s pushing out a menu of pure comfort such as nonna’s meatballs with soft polenta, and more nuanced dishes introducing smoked pasta and alternative meat cuts. The regional theme carries through to the wine list, with a clutch of West Australian winemakers mixing with Friulian and Venetian makers. Tradition and modernity mix well here.
