At the tip of Applecross looking out across to Como, Goolugatup Heathcote is the historic site of the former Point Heathcote Mental Reception Home. Built on land belonging to the Beeliar people of the Noongar Nation, the location now houses both a museum dedicated to the site’s history, and an art gallery. The museum’s fascinating collection includes includes photographs, newspaper cuttings, maps and plans, oral histories, and old medical equipment and nurse uniforms. It also lets you step back in time to get a glimpse of what the wards used to be like. The gallery celebrates and supports local talent, with working studios available as part of an artist-in-residence program. All works sold in the gift shop are handmade and designed by Perth artists. Kids will dig the pirate playpark in the beautiful grounds. The gorgeously scenic spot’s also home to the Heath Ledger Memorial, if you feel like paying your respects.
