With every new small bar that opens, the theme and the décor has to be something that’s going to grab attention, whether it’s a single-spirit focus, jumping on the straining craft beer bandwagon or, in the case of Rodney’s Bait ’n Tackle, installing an actual 1940s river cruiser as the bar. But a venue can’t survive in this climate by gimmick alone and Rodney’s is backed by rotating beer taps – think the likes of Eagle Bay Brewing Co, Perth Draught and Pirate Life – plus the obligatory good wine mix, from these shores and further afield. Food is as laidback as the seaside theme, with Freo sardines and toasted rolls. Oh, and the name isn’t just for show: you can get bait and tackle here, if you feel like strolling over to the water to get a line in.
