Nyonya food for solo diners? Yes it's possible. Aunty Anne, tucked away in the less tourist trodden Lorong Macalister (there's a good chee cheong fun stall here at the beginning of this lane in the morning), offers individual lunch sets for those who want a taster of Penang Nyonya (Straits Chinese) cuisine.
Choose from nasi ulam (mixed herbs rice served with otak otak and acar) or assam laksa or Nyonya laksa. Each set comes with a drink, an appetiser (pai tee and ju hu char) and dessert. We highly recommend the nasi ulam; made with 17 herbs and ingredients, it's so good and fragrant you could eat it on its own without the side dishes. And the otak-otak: most versions you get these days are firm custards but this has a soft mousse texture.
The restaurant looks more like a house than a restaurant but don't let that deter you. The food here is homecooked and everything is made from scratch. They are only open for lunch with a very limited (set) menu. Dinner is by reservation only: two days in advance for a minimum of ten pax.
