Toh Soon, a coffee shop so small it barely qualifies as one, is more accurately a set of tables and chairs in a sheltered alleyway sandwiched between two buildings. The stony, concrete floors, coupled with Toh Soon’s specialties being its toasted bread, makes Toh Soon hardly any epitome of gastronomic excellence. However, contrary to expectations, by the sheer virtue of Toh Soon’s painstakingly charcoal toasted bread, with its homemade kaya, and its rich Hainanese coffee, it has locals (old and young), tourists and expatriates alike huddled in the darkness of its shop. Crowds of people head down to its rundown shack of a shop early in the morning for their dose of its half-boiled egg, toast and coffee - and that pretty much just speaks for itself.
