Tuak, or palm wine, is a beverage of choice among Penang’s local Indian population. Shop owner Deva has been making the potent alcohol for five years, using coconut trees from Nibong Tebal on the mainland as his primary source of materials. Made through a process of fermentation using a coconut palm flower in a bamboo receptacle, this all-natural product has a slightly milky consistency with a sweet aftertaste. For just RM2 a glass, it is definitely worth a try. If you’re looking to entertain a dinner party with this interesting local flavour, not to worry: Deva offers takeaway containers as well.
