Built in the 1900’s, Macalister Mansion was fondly named after Colonel Norman Macalister. A native of Scotland, the colonel was the Lieutenant-Governor of Prince of Wales Isle (Penang's old title) from 1808 to 1810. His life ended while traveling home to Scotland - presumably lost in the South China Sea.
Located just outside the heritage zone, Macalister Mansion stands out in its white splendour. As you enter the driveway you can imagine how the original owners must have lived.
Despite its sprawling grounds, Macalister Mansion only has eight rooms, but that gives you some idea as to their girth and splendour. Each has a slightly different layout – the only similarity being the white colour scheme. All rooms come with Bang & Olufsen sound systems, Nespresso coffee machines, goosedown pillows (there is even a pillow menu), 400-threadcount linen and a selection of art you'll wish you owned. Each room boasts of unique features as well – Room 4 has a gorgeous spiral staircase while Room 1, also called the Bridal Suite, has its own dressing room.
Commissioned works of art cover walls, nooks and crannies, and veer from quirky and eclectic to classical and whimsical. There is a swimming pool in the front garden and four F&B outlets covering every aspect of dining, from all-day to fine, and even a whisky and cigar lounge.
