Founded in 1801, the Acheen Street Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in Penang and the land for the mosque was donated by Syed Sheriff Tengku Syed Hussain Al-Aidid (an Aceh-Arabian merchant of Achenese royalty). It has an Achehnese roof and an Arab-style white minaret that cuts a striking sight against the sky. When visiting, make sure you take a walk around the surrounding area – it’s where the first Arab settlers lived on the island.
