It almost goes without saying that we were met by a massive, snaking queue when we arrived at the Big Mamma group’s fifth venture, a trattoria with huge wooden tables and old-fashioned library lighting. The place is buzzing with chefs, waitstaff and diners (the place holds 230) and you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to the menu.
The €5 margheritas are a true marvel – they don’t scrimp on size either. At such a steal, we consider it a starter and order pesto Trofie (a twisted, spiral-shaped pasta), topped with mozzarella. With the top button undone, at this point, dessert is out of the question. But then the house speciality ice cream is mentioned (made fresh at noon and in the evening) and there is no resisting that. Unctuous pistachio, which is a little salty but almost as good as the Sicilian stuff. Did we leave on the brink of a food coma? Yes. Was it worth it? Absolutely.
