Situated in the middle of the Belleville area - known mostly for its plethora of Chinese and Vietnamese restaurants - expect L'Iliade to take you on an unexpected culinary journey. The walls of this pocket-sized restaurant are adorned by huge Turkish and Persian carpets in glowing colours, and the menu is mediterranean classics, with GreeK and Turkish inflections.
On the menu is mezze starters like taramaslata made with Argan oil, spiced grills and specialities of the chef Alain Emmungil, such as moussaka, Feuilleté de Troie (a pastry parcel filled with lamb, mushrooms, tomato, fennel and ginger) or Incick, lamb saddle roasted with herbs and caramelised aubergine with carrots. Being mediterranean, vegetarians are certainly not left out. As for drinks, there's the classic apéritifs like Ouzo and Samos, plus Greek wines, to be tasted along with classic folk music.
L'Iliade has recently starting doing a mediterranean brunch, full of flavour and with plenty of choice (€21), which is as close as we'll get to a holiday in the sun without leaving Paris.
