What’s the vibe?
Among the good spots in Butte-aux-Cailles, Chez Mamane is an institution, serving up hearty, affordable Algerian couscous. A tiny room on rue des Cinq Diamants, this couscous canteen is packed with neighbourhood regulars every night, who gather at the bar or on the pavements to share their apéritif with those who've been drawn to what is known as the ‘best broth in Paris’.
What should I order?
We recommend the Couscous Royal, a combination of perfectly grilled merguez sausages and tender mutton pieces (€17), both are excellent. The chicken couscous is just as hefty and delicious, and for only €11. The mountain of fine grain couscous is best served between two; its broth is fragrantly spiced with coriander and the vegetables have the perfect bite.
Between bites, you can wash it all down with a glass of Boulaouane wine (€3), or a craft beer from Paname Brewing Company (€4 a half). If you’ve still got room, the sweet-toothed won’t be able to resist the lovely North African pastries (€3 each) – perfect with a glass of fragrant mint tea.
