Since the mid-19th century, trains pulling into Montparnasse station from Brittany have been disgorging displaced Bretons into the neighbourhood. It is them that we have to thank for the area's superlative crêperies and brasseries serving up culinary specialities from their homeland. A Saint-Malo offers everything you'd expect from Bretonnian cuisine, except perhaps oysters: generous salads, meats and buckwheat pancakes are all on the menu. N.B. prices are on the lofty side – a pint will set you back €9 at night.
