Don't come here looking to bathe in the shade of cypress trees – at the Fort d'Aubervilliers, parkland is in short supply and graffiti rules. The terrain used to serve as a scrapyard; if we tell you that the tables of the outdoor café consist of planks of wood perched on a pile of disused tyres, you get the idea. Every summer, artists, hipsters and culture vultures flock here for the In Situ festival, which displays the newest and best of the world of street art. The rest of the year the venue makes for a pleasantly shabby park substitute – though a stretch of budding greenery on its outskirts threatens to reclaim the land. A pleasant, if thoroughly urban, spot for a picnic.
