You know Les Trois 8, the excellent rock/beer bar, where drinking nose-to-elbow with your neighbour is part of the experience? And you’ve heard of the Outland, brewer and supplier to a multitude of Parisian watering holes? Well they’ve created a beautiful love child – in the form of a bar just across from Charonne. It’s a large, beautiful space with an immense bar – the kind of American-style taproom you might expect to see a cowboy leaning up against.
Choose from twelve artisanal beers, many from the Outland brewery, plus a few guest brews like West, Mont Salève, Thiriez and Sainte Cru. If you’re someone who gets intimidated ordering in a craft beer joint – fear not. These guys may be experts but they’re helpful too. Julien, the boss, suggests we start with Clearly Hoppy, an Outland pale ale, opaque as a glass of OJ and almost as refreshing. Then the more intense Murica, one of Outland’s specialities, a 6% IPA and a total delight. Our companion is not a beer fan but she enjoys the Plum Brett Pale nonetheless – it’s barrel-aged and as light as a cider. Don’t miss the Bah Bah Brunette, with its delicious coffee aroma. It’s equally hard to resist the sobressada, a tender, spicy chorizo served with turnip pickles, capers and Cedric Casanova olive oil. And if you’re really truly averse to beer, then there’s some good wines on offer. Without a doubt, we'll head back to Outland to savour the sweet nectar of this excellent collaboration.
