The merou or grouper is an extremely ugly species of fish with a unique set of qualities: carnivorous and hermaphroditic, all groupers are born female and become male over the course of their lives. But none of this back story affects the experience at this charming bar on the Rue Paradis in the 10th arrondissement. There’s beer like the Paillette, brewed in Normandy, and funky house cocktails like the Tata Yoyo (vodka, lemon juice, ginger beer and Angostura bitters) and wine. The space is small, green, a bit retro and enjoys a large second bar and cave downstairs, where DJs spin funk, acid jazz and rock and there’s (just) room for some dancing. Simple, unpretentious and fun – a bit like the grouper. Maybe.
