All eyes are on Osaka this year as the city hosts Expo 2025. Running for six months from April to October under the theme ‘Designing future society for our lives,’ the event also known as the World’s Fair is expected to see a whopping 28 million people from around the globe descend on the island of Yumeshima, with 150 countries and 25 international organisations participating. Osaka’s effortlessly cool blend of delicious food, culture and innovation will be in full view, offering a chance for visitors to understand what makes it one of the most exciting cities in the world.

In particular, Umeda – one of Osaka’s most popular entertainment hubs – is taking the theme of this year’s Expo seriously. The district, known for its culinary scene, high-end department stores, trendy boutiques and sky-high sights, is adding some major new offerings. Developments like Grand Green Osaka, with Umekita Park at its centre, present the area through a new lens, focusing on nature and sustainability while embracing the city’s individuality and laid-back lifestyle. As Umeda continues to evolve, it's quickly becoming the district that best represents the city's future.

See Umeda in a clearer light with Jins

With the future looking bright for Umeda, Jins has its sights set on making sure you see it clearly. After opening its first shop back in 2001, the brand has built a name for itself, creating eyewear products that combine stylish, high-quality Japanese craftsmanship and affordability. With over 300 styles of glasses and speedy yet precise eye examinations, which ensure a perfect fit for each customer, the company’s Grand Front Osaka flagship store is right at home in a city that’s paving the way for the future.

Located in the popular Grand Front Osaka complex next to Osaka Station, this recently renovated Jins store offers lens fittings in as little as 30 minutes – which means just enough time for a quick tour of Umeda while you wait. As the store is open from 11am to 9pm, you can time your trip according to your choice of adventure in an area with plenty to offer, from shopping and entertainment to food and nightlife. Newly opened attractions like Grand Green Osaka and Time Out Market offer a perfect opportunity for food and shopping, while Ohatsu Tenjin Shrine and the Umeda Sky Building allow you to take in the area’s history and landscapes.

Better yet, with a purchase of a pair of glasses, you’ll receive an exclusive Jins eyeglass cloth with an Umeda design. The cleaning cloth doubles as a Night Voucher, which grants you discounts and benefits at participating businesses in the area.

Shop and savour delicacies

With an initial opening in September 2024, Grand Green Osaka has already become a popular hub for travellers and locals alike in Osaka. One of the newest additions to the development, Time Out Market, showcases the best of Osaka’s food and culture with 17 restaurants and two bars, all curated by Time Out’s editorial team. While you wait for your new glasses, choose from some of the Kansai region’s best eats – from sushi and ramen to modern Mexican and Korean-inspired menus, produced by renowned chefs – and immerse yourself in local culture and hospitality.

Soak up history and see the city from above

Nearby, the Ohatsu Tenjin shrine boasts over 1,300 years of history and stands as one of the prefecture’s most popular and significant Shinto shrines. The shrine is known for its associations with the 1703 play ‘The Love Suicides at Sonezaki,’ widely considered Japan’s version of ‘Romeo and Juliet.’ A popular destination for young couples, the shrine also hosts regular festivals and events, including a flea market on the first Friday of each month, with around 30 stalls selling retro wares and fashion. On the way back to pick up your glasses, make the most of your trip with a visit to the shrine’s popular shopping street, which features food and stores by day and karaoke and live music venues by night.

To get your bearings while you wait, make the six-minute walk from Jins to the Umeda Sky Building. Here, at an elevation of 173 meters, take in a panoramic view of the city from the Kuchu Teien Observatory’s rooftop floor. Inside on the 40th floor, sip coffee at the 35-metre-long glass counter and enjoy the vista as you plan the rest of the day. On the way back down, the glass elevator provides perfect photo ops, and the Showa Retro Shopping Street on the first and basement floors offers a glimpse of old-school Umeda. Finally, pick up your new glasses and explore the rest of the city in a new, clearer light.

The Expo awaits

To check out Expo 2025 with your new specs, head to Yumeshima between April 13 and October 13. To get there from Umeda, jump on the Osaka Loop Line from JR Osaka Station to Bentencho Station. There, transfer to the Osaka Metro Chuo line and ride it to Yumeshima Station, which is located at the east entrance of the Expo venue. The whole trip should take less than half an hour.
