Once a landfill site, Sakaihama in the city of Sakai used to be known mostly for its long rows of warehouses, but the redevelopment of this sprawling seaside zone saw part of it turned into a pleasant park with barbecue facilities, a dog park and various sports facilities.
Said park is home to the Seaside Stage Swap Meet, one of the top flea markets in the Osaka region. Held in an expansive parking lot next to a cinema complex, the market attracts around 120 sellers every time and takes place twice a month (once a month in January, February, July and September). Crowds of shoppers on the hunt for pre-loved treasures gather at Sakaihama from the opening hour of 10am, and you’ll want to be there early to get your hands on the best items – whether it’s second-hand clothes and accessories, cooking utensils or vintage toys.
Unless you have a car, getting to the site is most convenient by bus; there’s a free shuttle from Suminoekoen Station, while city buses run from Sakai Station.
