The Tanabe area has long been noted for its gorgeous old houses and wealth of small, independently run eateries and bars, but in recent years this cosy residential neighbourhood has also started attracting bibliophiles, with a number of upstart bookstores opening their doors. One standout is LVDB Books, set in a beautifully renovated 90-year-old house and stocking more than 8,000 titles. While new books aren’t eschewed entirely, the focus here is on secondhand tomes, with especially impressive selections of photo, design and art books by both Japanese and international artists.
LVDB boasts strong connections with the rest of Asia, including Taiwan, and has frequently collaborated with the Taiwan-focused Voices of Photography imprint – including by hosting exhibitions featuring the label’s photographers. Also of note is the selection of zines and other small-press publications, personally curated by the shopkeeper. Besides art, you’ll find the picture books, cooking, and humanities shelves well stocked. LVDB also hosts occasional events, from photo exhibitions to rakugo storytelling nights.
