A narrow alley in the backstreets of Minami-Senba, Senba Uraroji is home to a number of small restaurants located inside machiya – former residences of merchants and craftsmen in which the shop and living quarters are both under one roof.
Highlights include Dashidokoro Senba Yamamoto, run by the venerable kelp purveyor Oguraya Yamamoto and serving up a range of dishes based on dashi (soup stock made from fish and kelp), and Yakitori Saihi, where you’ll find Kagoshima jidori heirloom chicken skewered and grilled over high-grade charcoal.
Those in the mood for seafood should stop by Sushi Toyotaka, a Bib Gourmand-listed sushi joint where you can enjoy orthodox nigiri sushi prepared by one of the city’s most talented female chefs.
