De Maria (1935–2013), a pioneer of Minimal, Conceptual and land art, was perhaps best know for his Lightning Field—a massive installation of 400 polished stainless-steel poles, placed in the New Mexico desert in a grid array stretching one mile by one kilometer. Units of measurement, and more specifically the tricks they can play, were important to his work, which embodied the spiritual qualities of geometry as a method for unlocking the secrets of space in both literal and cosmic senses. This smallish exhibit is the first since Gagosian recently announced its role as handler of the artist's estate.
