Van Cliburn, the U.S. pianist who rose to fame after winning the first International Tchaikovsky Competition in the Soviet Union in 1958 (and now has the top US contest named after him), discusses his career with Live at the NYPL director Paul Holdengräber. The pair will also chat about Cliburn’s soon-to-be-auctioned collection of furniture, artwork and jewels, hitting Christie’s on May 17.
