Time Out says

“World music” often gets a bad rap for being the kind of genre preferred by yoga instructors, men with ponytails, and upstairs neighbors of dubious character. But if you look beyond the label, you’ll find some real gems, and The Global Beat Festival is a spectacular place to start. Head down to the Winter Garden on Friday the 13th for a free performance by Nouvelle Vague’s Mélanie Pain. Don’t let her last name fool you: She has a breathy, husky, ethereal voice that flits betweens sounding like a sex-kitten from a Godard movie and a 1940s jazz club singer. In other words, magnifique. This is the French chanteuse’s first solo NYC appearance and what better place for it than the Winter Garden’s ten-story glass atrium? Seriously, don’t sit this one out like un imbécile.
