The former Episcopal church on the corner of Sixth Avenue and West 20th Street has lived many lives since it was originally constructed in the 19th century. After being deconsecrated in the early 1970s, the space became a drug rehab. Then, during the club heyday of the ’80s and ’90s, it went in the opposite direction, with the iconic Limelight hosting all-night bacchanals (something some of today's
best parties in New York do their best to live up to). After being shuttered during the Giuliani era (and a brief incarnation as a new nightclub, Avalon), the building was transformed into a high-end retail space during the Bloomberg years. And now, since the newest David Barton outpost opened, Chelsea gym bunnies have been filling the once-hallowed halls, burning calories in the “free-weight chapel” and “yoga sanctuary”, and taking advantage of cutting edge fitness equipment amid centuries-old surroundings.
