At first glance, Graubard’s work could be mistaken for photojournalism. But while she has captured newsmakers like Richard Nixon over her 30-year career, she’s been more interested in suggesting narratives that remain stubbornly unresolved. She focuses particularly on subcultural subjects, such as surfers, punks in the ’80s East Village and mafiosi, like John Gotti.
