“Nigel Cooke: Black Mimosa”

This British painter has earned a considerable reputation with compositions mixing gestural abstraction and representational rendering to limn hallucinatory, dystopian hellscapes populated by cartoonish oddballs. Part Bosch, part De Kooning and part Halo, Cooke paintings are loaded with references to death, especially the presence of skulls, creating a strange hybrid of memento mori and landscape. This show of nine new canvases marks his Pace debut.
