Time Out says

Before the big fireworks show, head to the New-York Historical Society on the Upper West Side for a taste of what Americans were eating in 1776, the year that the U.S. gained its independence from Britain. On top of the street food and ice cream at this July 4 event, you'll also get a chance to meet historical interpreters who will teach you about vendors who sold their wares during that era in U.S. history, as well as some information on chef Hercules, George Washington's enslaved cook.

Admission is free for children who are 17 and younger, and is also included in the price of admission to the museum, which is $24 for adults. Activities run from 11am until 5pm.
