Seeing military and civilian cultures mingle is a rarity in Manhattan. Every now and then, we’ll spot uniformed servicemen and women, but they’re typically not part of our melting-pot demographic. That is, until Fleet Week—the one time of year when sailors flood east from the Hudson River. They take over our tourist hot spots and are welcomed with free rounds of drinks and fist bumps. On the same streets where outlandish outfits and garish costumes aren’t given a second glance, I was struck by the acknowledgment of the young men and women of our armed services. My goal with this series is to present the sailors' experience and the candid moments that came with it.
