You’d know if you’d been to one of Halal’s shindigs. Her signature event, Mutual Dreaming, matches progressive and underappreciated DJs to create a trippy environment she describes as “some kind of mysterious, immersive, disorienting fantasy realm that feels like an authentic underworld.” It’s the kind of wild, secret-location nightlife that’s becoming a welcome alternative to established, stiff clubs. “In New York, you can will things into existence,” says the DIY producer, visual artist and musician. “Every year, I meet new people, focus my intentions and those intentions crystallize into real things.” Her parties, which she describes as “foggy environments with people dancing in this out-of-control, rebellious way that have nothing to do with status or money,” have been selling out fast since 2010.
