Instructor: Maria Torres; director, choreographer and teacher at Broadway Dance Center (broadwaydancecenter.org). Pictured with dance partner Sekou McMiller.
What it is: A nightclub dance with Latin origins that started in the early 1970s. Usually set to disco music, it was popularized by the film Saturday Night Fever.
Why Maria likes it: “It was so cool to do something similar to the mambo, but to the music that was playing on the radio. I was like, Oh my God, I gotta do that.”
When to do it: July 11, with The Loser’s Lounge Presents: Donna Summer and the Disco Divas. The Loser’s Lounge—a musicians’ collective—honors mirror-ball sirens including Donna Summer. Stick around after for a silent disco (10–11:30pm; $5, free with a Loser’s Lounge ticket), where partyers can listen to Freedom Dance Party DJs through headphones.
