After nearly 30 years, the Gypsy of the Year Competition has yielded the stage to this new annual event, which bears a less controversial name but is otherwise more or less the same. Ensemble singers and dancers—those hardworking troupers content to blend into the background—bask in the limelight and raise money for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS in a variety show full of skits, songs and dances. Showtune savant Seth Rudetsky hosts the festivities for his 11th time; the show features guest appareances by multiple Broadway stars (including Norbert Leo Butz, Cherry Jones, Michael Urie and the female leads of Mean Girls) and an opening number that pays tribute to the legacy of Asian-American performers.
