The York's Musicals in Mufti series, which offers stripped-down concert stagings of Broadway rarities, devotes its winter season to lesser-known works by show-tune master Jule Styne (Gypsy). First up is Styne's 1968 collaboration with Betty Comden, Adolph Green and Arthur Laurents, which charts a young black woman's journey through racist adversity in the middle of the 20th century. Although it was was not a hit—of all shows that have won the Tony Award for Best Musical, this one had the fewest Broadway performances—its score includes such gems as "My Own Morning" and "I Wanted to Change Him." Gerry McIntyre directs the production, with a cast led by Stephanie Umoh (Junk) and Vivian Reed (Bubbling Brown Sugar).
