Mrs. Warren's Profession

Cherry Jones makes a full meal of the title role in George Bernard Shaw's 1893 drama about motherhood and prostitution. Swanning through Doug Hughes's handsome and elegant revival like the proverbial cat who got the cream, Jones radiates sexy authority and hard-won worldly experience. Less successful is a shrill Sally Hawkins as Vivie Warren, the self-possessed young woman who realizes her life has been financed by sexual slavery.—David Cote
